Self-Service Banner -- Information for Advisors

(1) Faculty and Advisor Registration of Students

One feature of Self-Service Banner is that it enables faculty (advisors) to directly register students (advisees). This method is much preferred over completing paper-based registration forms for many reasons. It saves time, reduces possible error from data re-entry, and reduces waste and expense of using paper forms.

Here are the steps (with links to screen images) for a faculty member to register a student using Self-Service Banner:

  1. Login to the New River portal (https://my.newriver.edu) and in the Launch Pad area click on the link for Self-Service Banner.
  2. If you are prompted for your User ID and PIN, enter your 9-digit New River ID number as your User ID and your 6-digit date of birth as your PIN. If this doesn't work, contact the Help Desk (304-929-6725) or someone in Student Services for assistance.
  3. Within SSB, click the Faculty Services tab (screen image).
  4. Click the option to Add or Drop Classes (screen image).
  5. Select Term that you wish to register the student for and click Submit (screen image).
  6. Type in the New River ID Number of the student you are registering and click Submit (screen image).
  7. If the correct student's name is displayed, click Submit once again (screen image). If not, then do your query once again to locate the correct student and click Submit.
  8. Enter the Personal Information Number (PIN) of the student. This number is created by the IT office, but shared with the Registrar who communicates the information by sending a list of all students eligible for online registration (sorted by Advisor name) to all advisors.

(2) Accessing Class List and Entering Grades

  1. Login to the New River portal (https://my.newriver.edu) and in the Launch Pad area click on the link for Self-Service Banner.
  2. If you are prompted for your User ID and PIN, enter your 9-digit New River ID number as your User ID and your 6-digit date of birth as your PIN. If this doesn't work, contact the Help Desk (304-929-6725) or someone in Student Services for assistance.
  3. Within SSB, click the Faculty Services tab (screen image).
  4. To view an updated course roster click on Summary Class List or Detail Class List and if you teach more than one course select the course for which you need a roster. This information is updated in real time, meaning that adds and drops show up as they happen.
  5. When it is time to submit either midterm or final grades, the links for those tasks are also available within Self Service Banner.
