ITS 201: Using VPN to Access the New River Network

Overview

We changed from using a Cisco VPN client to a Sophos VPN client in January 2024.

We have a Knowledge base article that provides step-by-step directions:

https://help.newriver.edu/knowledgebase.php?article=30

The VPN client isn't needed if you are already on campus because you are inside the New River network. It is intended for remote employees who wish to securely connect (with authenticated access) to New River internal resources that are restricted to New River access only - like Ellucian Banner and Cisco IP Communicator software (softphone directions).

Please note, self-service Banner modules are available to remote users without VPN.

Employees must request VPN access (submit your request to itsupport@newriver.edu) so we can update your Active Directory configuration to allow VPN. Just send us an email and we'll grant you the access you need and we'll reply to you when we've done so.

IT staff must also install the Sophos VPN client on your laptop computer and you'll need to bring it to campus for that installation.

NOTE: If you've never used a VPN client before, the IT staff can provide you with information regarding how it works and how you can best use it. Please contact the Help Desk to request this information.
