Course Assessment: From Objective to Effectiveness
We all know that assessment is important and that everyone should be involved but there seems to be a
collective groan when we discuss it. Are we afraid of what we will find out? Does the task seem to be too
daunting? Do we not feel the results to be worth the effort? We will discuss a very basic but effective way to
assess your course objectives. We'll take you step by step from course objectives to final assessment using
data collected from a course offered this spring semester. Understanding the alignment of course objectives
with assessments used in class will provide an effective model for how you might better assess your own
course objectives. Reviewing the connection with institutional strategic objectives will bring it full circle.

New Student Orientation for Distance Education Students
Since fall 2005, the College’s enrollment that is derived from distance education has increased from less than
10% to more than 30% of the overall enrollment. And even though new student orientation has improved
dramatically during this time, it is still not well attended nor can it be required (since distance education
students might never visit a campus). The solution seems to be offering new student orientation online and
recent efforts on this initiative will be summarized in this session. Progress towards implementing this for fall
2013 term will also be discussed.
