Redefining Distance Education for New River
Definitions for distance learning modalities vary. What some folks call a “hybrid” course others might call a
“blended” course. Some assume that “online” means 100% online while definitions from the Higher Learning
Commission and the Department of Education have a much lower threshold of only 50% for the amount of
content and interaction necessary to comprise a distance education course or program. At New River, we’ve
recently redefined our definitions for “Instructional Method” and “Course Type” to be implemented for Spring
2014. This session will provide an overview and explanation of this information. A huge next step is to engage
instructors to categorize their courses.
