New River Online > Training and Workshops > Accessing New River Resources with VPN

Problem

I'm at home and connected to the Internet using a broadband Internet connection (cable modem, satellite, or ADSL). I would like to access a computer or server that is behind the New River firewall but can't.

Overview

When you are connected to the Internet using a broadband connection you are outside the college firewall which prevents you from accessing some New River internal resources. If you install the Cisco VPN Client you will be able to access these resources by authenticating with your email username and password. The VPN client isn't needed if you are already on campus because you are inside the firewall. It is intended for remote users who wish to securely connect (authenticated access) to New River internal resources.

Download the VPN Client

There are just a few steps to complete before you're ready to access the internal New River network and they are:

  1. Download the latest version of the VPN client for your platform of computer (Mac OSX | Cisco VPN Client for Windows Vista | Cisco VPN Client for Windows XP/2003).
  2. After downloading, you must unzip and then install the VPN client.
  3. When you open a connection you'll be prompted for your personal email username and password so enter it as you would for checking email.
  4. Access the New River network using the VPN client (the graphic below portrays what the VPN Client should look like after installed).
