1) Introductions and Membership - The membership was discussed. Some folks present at the meeting were not listed as members. Some members on the list were not present. Those present were: David Ayersman, Brian Testerman, Gregg Wingo, Donna Lewis, Lisa Brewer, Nick Bassett, Renae McGinnis, Roger Griffith, Bruce Sneidman, and Steve Butler. Those expected but not present were: Robert Chapman, Norvill Clark, and Shirley Davis. Need to see Dr. Faulk regarding the "official" membership.

2) Purpose and Mission of the OLAG - The group discussed this and generally agreed that a broader definition of responsibilities would be appropriate. Need to update the charge to the committee from the Curriculum Committee and Dr. Faulk. The revised group would likely be named the Information Technology Advisory Group (ITAG).

3) The IT plans were presented with some discussion. The group generally agreed to the direction being taken by the plans.

4) CART and WebCT were discussed. The group generally agreed that a single course management solution would best suit New River. This new WebCT server is planned to be available for Spring 2008. Support to faculty with course content in CART must be provided to assist with the transition. While no new CART courses will be developed, New River may continue offering some CART courses in Spring 2008 if those instructors are unable to move their courses into WebCT by then.

5-7) Having course shells for every course section will obviate the need for a specific "web-enhanced" fee. Following the meeting Dr. Ayersman met with Dr. Faulk to discuss this and there will be no fees charged in Spring 2008 for web-enhanced courses. A syllabus template will be included in each course shell.

Bruce Sneidman inquired about the availability of proctors at each campus for testing purposes. Historically, these folks have been:

  1. Nicholas County Campus - Bridgette Neill
  2. Beckley Campus - Susie Atkins
  3. Bluefield Campus - Rita Holcomb
  4. Greenbrier Valley Campus - Nora Overath

Greg's Summary of the Meeting

    • Greetings by Dr. Ayersman
    • The attendees discussed with Dr. Ayersman the membership roles of the two committees. It was explained that there are two distinctive committees in attendance: the Online Advisory Committee of the Faculty Senate and the Technology Committee (an administration committee). It was discussed that the purposes and missions of these entities were different and not necessarily concurrent. Dr. Ayersman was tasked with determining the administration’s membership for the Technology Committee for the upcoming year.
    • Dr. Ayersman briefed the committee on his goals for the coming year including the following:
    • Choosing a single course management solution (WebCT vs. CART)
    • Providing course shells for every section
    • Parallel infrastructure development, replacement, and/or enhancement
    • Email and server control
    • Promoting an online syllabus requirement
    • Eliminating extra charges for online courses
Discussion was centered around the status of CART, “smart” ID cards, lease versus purchase of servers and other technologies, and the role of users vs. technologists.
    • Dr. Ayersman briefed the committee on various technological enablers for the online environment:
    • iStream is available
    • Adobe Acrobat Connect
    • iLinc
    • WebEx
    • Elluminate Live
    • Respondus
    • Wimba
    • ConnectEDU
    • Dr. Ayersman also provided an overview of system in use by others institutions in WV (eastern, southern/excite, Kentucky, aib, sail) .
    • Dr. Ayersman provided an update on Office 2007 and possible training opportunities for staff, administration, and faculty.
    • The committee reviewed their Online Recommendations and requested a status update from Dr. Ayersman. He was unable to answer the current status and was detailed with requesting that Dr. Faulk brief the committee at the next meeting.
    • Dr. Ayersman was asked about the Virtual Campus structure. He replied that he felt that most nontechnical issues should remain under the provenance of the various campus deans and he would focus his capabilities on technical matters.
    • Dr. Ayersman reported that implementation of wireless-capable campuses is moving forward at different rates based on personnel and equipment levels at each location.
    • Dr. Ayersman was asked to discuss implementation of Tech Plan recommendations such as the following:
    • Open access and library services
    • Initiatives for overcoming the Digital Divide
    • Virtual desktops and laptops
    • The schedule for upgrading or enhancing computing laboratories including MACs
    • Computing laboratory design, and hardware and software configurations
    • The schedule for upgrading or enhancing technology infrastructure in classrooms
    • Appropriate technologies for placement in classrooms
    • New technologies and services to support faculty and the instructional program
    • Campus standards for hardware, software, and user support
    • Potential faculty development programs
Being unable to discuss the administration’s position on these issues Dr. Ayersman was asked to determine the status of these issues and to provide feedback to the committee.
